Another effort we participated in was the development of a white light inferometer. To do this we used an existing inferometer and modify it to allow for the measurement of the spectral peaks used in fiber alignment.
This is accomplished by removing the existing detector circuitry and substituting a transimpedance amplifier and low-noise detector in it's place.
Since the carrier wave generated by the interference patterns serve no purpose we eliminate them using an envelope detecting log amplifier. This provides the envelope and allows us to view a large dynamic range. We are able to plot the spectral pattern to better than 46 db under test conditions.
The results are synchronized with a reference laser and converted into digital format, processed using LABVIEW and displayed on a laptop computer.
Currently, the project is in development awaiting further funding from the U.S. Navy
